TriCare Runaway Bay Retirement Community residents, Ron and Coral Granville, moved to the Village nearly 10 years ago and have never looked back.
Mr Granville has always enjoyed fishing, having fished competitively prior to retirement representing Queensland on three occasions at Australian titles.
Not long after arriving at TriCare Runaway Bay Mr Granville thought he’d drop a line in, off the canal walkway close to their unit and to his surprise he caught a 40cm whiting, 35 cm bream and 60cm flathead.
“I walked back into our apartment and said to my wife I think I’ve died and gone to heaven!”
The Village is blessed with three pontoons capable of taking up to 12 boats and are also a great place to fish or to drop in a crab pot.
Keeping a regular fishing log since his arrival at TriCare Runaway Bay, Mr Granville said he can’t believe how many species are in the canal.
“I have documented at least 112 different types of marine creatures and kept a photographic record of all of them.One of the most thrilling experiences we have is the regular visit of friendly dolphins that come into the canals to feed. We also have a resident pelican, dozens of seagulls and numerous wood ducks,”
Mr Granville said he has never seen a bull shark in the canal, and only once caught a small hammerhead shark.
During the winter months large quantities of bream come into the canals, while during summer there are whiting, flathead and sand crabs. All make for a delicious meal or are put in the freezer on the odd occasion when the fish aren’t biting.
“For someone with a marine and fishing background like myself, TriCare Runaway Bay is an idyllic place to retire. We can’t imagine living anywhere else!” said Mr Granville.
