If you’re considering a move to a Retirement Community, it’s important to do your research—and a big part of this is to separate the myths from the facts.
While the benefits of rightsizing to a Retirement Community are many, there remain some outdated views on what life is like, in particular, about the demographic, lifestyle choices and costs involved in making the move.
So to separate the myths from the facts and give you an insight into what Retirement Community living is really like, in this article we’re debunking some of the common misconceptions we hear, so you can make an informed choice.
Myth #1: Retirement Living is the same as Aged Care
While it’s true that some of our communities are co-located with Aged Care Residences, they are completely different in their purpose and how they are set up and run. Retirement Communities are designed for active over 65s who are looking for a low-maintenance lifestyle that offers them the freedom and opportunity to enjoy life without the constraints of an oversized or unsuitable house. Our residents love the on-site services and facilities, as well as the social aspect of living in a small and friendly community.
Aged Care on the other hand is suited to those who require help to manage their daily tasks, or who require 24-hour care due to health concerns. While both our Aged Care Residences and Retirement Communities feature quality accommodation, facilities and activities, they are very different from one another as they cater for two separate demographics.
Myth #2: It is expensive to live in a Retirement Community
While the cost will vary between communities depending on the accommodation, facilities and location, you may be surprised to learn that it’s not as expensive as you think. Before making the decision to sell the family home and rightsize you should seek expert financial advice on your personal circumstances as a priority and gather information on the costs involved in the move. This includes the upfront, ongoing and exit fees to be sure you have a complete picture of overall costs.
Consider the long-term view when comparing costs too—even if you own your home, there are still many ongoing bills such as rates, gardening and possibly repairs or renovations depending on the age of your existing home.
Myth #3: You are restricted in what you can and can’t do
Some people worry that when you live in a Retirement Community, you lose your freedom, but this is not at all the case. You’re free to spend your days as you wish, enjoying your favourite hobbies and activities just as you did while living in the family home. In fact, our residents often discover new passions and skills after they move in, as there are many great opportunities to try new things, both individually and as part of a group.
From a daily swim in the pool or workout in the gym, to taking part in a group activity or class such as tai chi, aqua aerobics or bowls, it has never been easier to participate. And best of all, there is always plenty to do, learn and try.
Myth #4: You can’t bring your pet with you
Of course, the rules will vary depending on the village, but at TriCare Retirement Communities you are welcome to bring your small pet with you when you move into an independent living unit, subject to approval. Countless studies have shown the benefits of pet ownership on both physical and mental health, and we love seeing this in action when our residents share their homes with their beloved pets.
So if your morning routine involves a stroll to the shops with your pup to grab a coffee, or you like to unwind in the evening with your cat on your lap and your favourite TV show on the box, you’ll be pleased to know the tradition can continue in our communities.
Myth #5: You can’t have family or friends visit or stay over
While there are certain rules to follow when you move into a Retirement Community to keep everyone happy and safe, your home remains your own. At TriCare, you can have friends and family visit and even stay overnight or for short periods. This means you can have the grandkids stay for sleepovers anytime and can enjoy relaxed catch-ups with your nearest and dearest.
Your visitors are also free to use the facilities while they stay, as long as you are with them. This means you can take the kids for a swim or milkshake in the lounge for an extra special treat that’s right on your doorstep.
Dig a little deeper to uncover the facts
Like anything, when it comes to Retirement Communities, it pays to dig a little deeper and conduct your own independent research, rather than going by what others say alone. And importantly, be sure to physically visit any Retirement Communities you are considering as an option—your instincts and gut feelings will provide another valuable piece of information to help you decide if it’s a good fit for you.
