Residents at TriCare James Ommaney Retirement Community were treated to an exciting and energetic musical performance by African drummer, Joseph Matovu as part of their monthly entertainment calendar.
Each month, different entertainers such as singers, dancers, musicians and even the local school choir visit the boutique retirement village at Mount Ommaney to share their talents with residents.
During the afternoon at TriCare James Ommaney, Mr Matovu had the residents drumming away to his beautiful voice and the rhythms of Africa.
Originally from Uganda, Mr Matovu aka ‘African Drummer’, began his passion for drumming at a very young age owing to the absence of toys and TV during his childhood. He tells of a childhood sitting around the evening camp fires learning the skills of drumming, singing, dancing and storytelling.
At his workshops and performances, Mr Matovu combines drumming skills of African traditional tribal culture with a strong passion for entertaining, relaxing, empowering and teaching.
Quite simply, Mr Matovu told his audience on the day that when he is drumming he feels happy.
TriCare James Ommaney resident, Val Rees said that his feelings of happiness were contagious which made is such a special afternoon of entertainment and inclusion.
Seated in the Village’s activities room, over 20 people joined in on the performance using a number of Mr Matovu’s handcrafted drums made in Uganda.
Resident, Mardi Baker said she loved the participation and encouragement from Mr Matovu.
“It was pure joy listening to his voice and taking part in such a fun interactive activity.”
