Relatively new to Toowoomba, Elizabeth Grace chose to move into Tricare Willow Glen Retirement Community a little over 18 months ago after she recently became widowed.
“Retirement living isn’t for everyone; however, it was the perfect decision for me.
“Before I moved into TriCare Willow Glen I didn’t know many people in Toowoomba, and I felt lonely. Now I feel so safe and secure in my new apartment and I have met so many lovely people,” said Mrs Grace.
Mrs Grace moved from a four bedroom, two bathroom home into a two bedroom unit and says it was the best thing she could have done.
“I got rid of half a house of furniture at least, and I no longer have the worry of mowing lawns, keeping up with maintenance or all the cleaning that a big home creates. I feel very comfortable here,” said Mrs Grace.
TriCare Willow Glen has two full time maintenance staff along with a list of plumbers and electricians on call via a resident handbook.
Help isn’t restricted to general maintenance. Village Manager, Tim Naidu, says Village staff go out of their way to help residents in many ways including coping with new technology devices such as smart phones, tablets and note books.
Financially, downsizing has been made even easier with the Australian Government’s recent announcement to reduce pressure on housing affordability in this year’s Federal Budget.
From July 1, 2018, people aged 65 and over will be able to make a post tax contribution into their superannuation of up to $300,000 (or $600,000 per couple) from the sale of their family home if it has been their main place of residence for 10 years or more.
This new initiative gives older Australian’s more incentive to downsize from their larger homes that no longer meet their needs, and consider alternative living options such as retirement community living.
