Win Jackson, and her late husband Bob, were the first residents to move into TriCare Compton Gardens Retirement Community when it first opened its doors on October 5, 1990.
Brisbane natives, Mr & Mrs Jackson moved across town to Aspley, downsizing from their family home to be closer to family and have more flexibility to travel.
The TriCare Compton Gardens we see today is very different to the Village 27 years ago.
“Originally two dairy farms, when we moved in there were only two rows of apartments. Now the Village has tripled in size and there are two pools, beautifully landscaped gardens and a great restaurant that is open every day for morning tea and lunch.
“We also have a much busier monthly activities calendar now. You can be as active or quiet as you like. There is no pressure to get involved but it’s nice to know there is always someone about to talk to,” said Mrs Jackson.
Three of Mrs Jackson’s five sons live in Brisbane and regularly call in to see how she is.
With such a large family, Mrs Jackson commented that she used to spend every Saturday cooking for the week ahead when her children were young.
“I rarely cook now, I either dine in at our lovely restaurant or take a meal home and heat it up – in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever used my oven in the apartment, only the microwave!” said Mrs Jackson.
TriCare Compton Gardens Village Manager, Sandra Lasserre, said the location of the Village adds to the appeal of retirement living.
“With public transport on our doorstep, visits to the local shopping centre are made that much easier. Residents also love the adjoining parkland and Cabbage Tree Creek for quiet walks in a bush atmosphere,” said Mrs Lasserre.
