TriCare Mt Gravatt Retirement Community resident, Peter Window, attributes his creative flair to his grandfather, who lived close by when he was a child growing up on his parent’s pineapple farm.
He taught him that you were only ever limited by your imagination, and showing him how to be creative with different objects and materials.
“My grandfather was very clever at making things from newspaper and this has been invaluable to me in creating party decorations and Origami.
One idea leads to another and I am never short of ideas because memories and visual images pop into mind, usually when I am working on something else,” said Mr Window.
In his 10 years at TriCare Mt Gravatt, Mr Window has taken on the responsibility of decorations for many of the special events held at the Village. Only recently has he handed on the baton to follow one of his other great passions, drawing and painting.
After only a few lessons in the finer points of art, Mr Window began drawing in charcoal and later progressed to pastel with the result of his drawings coming to life in more delicate detail.
“My art is on display in various places throughout TriCare Mt Gravatt and that has been inspirational in knowing my art is there for all,” said Mr Window.
He also sells his art regularly through a stall holder at the South Brisbane market, with all proceeds going to Wesley Cancer Care at The Wesley Hospital who cared for his wife during her nine year battle with cancer.
In addition to his love of art, Mr Window also runs a fortnightly Easy Listening program for residents and is involved in the Village’s garden program, striking cuttings for their beautifully landscaped tropical gardens.
“I have become very involved in life at TriCare Mt Gravatt which has helped me through some particularly low times.
Without the staff and resident’s support, I may not have followed this creative path or experienced the healing benefits,” said Mr Window.
