Our Aged Care Residences were buzzing with Bavarian spirit this year as each location celebrated Oktoberfest in their own unique way. From savouring authentic German delicacies to donning traditional lederhosen and dirndls — this annual celebration of beer, food, music, and dancing brought smiles to each of our residents’ faces.
Originally from Munich, Bavaria, Oktoberfest is a beloved two-week folk festival that spreads joy worldwide each year during September and October. This cultural celebration proved perfect for bringing the TriCare community together for some German-inspired fun.
Not the wurst time of year: our residents enjoyed a feast of German flavours!
At TriCare, we believe mealtimes should be both nutritious and exciting, and our Oktoberfest celebration transported residents to Germany through a feast of traditional favourites!
Residents enjoyed classic German dishes including succulent bratwurst topped with tangy sauerkraut, warm buttered pretzels, traditional Obatzter (cheese spread) with radish and rye bread, and more. No Oktoberfest would be complete without raising a traditional glass stein filled with cold Bavarian beer, either – just like they do in Munich!
We had a Polka Party!
There was no shortage of music and dancing for Oktoberfest within our Aged Care Residences this year, adding a little bit of fun and playfulness to everyone’s month. German music flooded the halls and made for very lively environments, bringing everyone together through song and dance.
Traditional Polka and folk music was played for the residents to enjoy and wave their hands along to, with some even getting up for a dance! It was a great time seeing all of our residents come together to let their hair down and have a laugh.
Manfred, from our Kawana Waters Residence, even walked around the Residence to entertain everyone with his amazing piano accordion! It was a delight to hear some German tunes played live from such a unique instrument.
Getting into the spirit with all the bells and whistles
The staff in our Residences always do such a great job in transforming the common spaces with themed decor when everyone has a celebration like Oktoberfest. The halls were decked with Oktoberfest-themed decorations, including the iconic blue and white diamond patterned tablecloths, German flags, and more!
Our residents and staff always love to get involved in the theme too, by dressing up with all sorts of fun costumes and props. There were fake moustaches, frilly plaid dresses worn with vests, and grey wizard hats; a historical symbol of wealth in German culture. These fun decorations and novelty props helped everyone get even further into the spirit, bringing each of our Aged Care communities closer together through fun times and good memories.
