From a dance floor spark to 40 years of love, Michael and Joan’s story is a testament to lifelong companionship, laughter, and the joy of shared memories.
Valentine’s Day is a chance to pause, reflect, and appreciate the people who have walked through life with us. For Michael and Joan, love started on the dance floor and has lasted more than 40 years, proving that true love only deepens with time.
Love at first sight… almost!
When Michael first saw Joan at an Italian dance club, she was gliding across the floor in a white dress with a floral pattern, and he knew instantly – “That’s the girl for me.” They started dating soon after, and within six months, their bond was undeniable. Five years later, sitting on a hill overlooking the Shannon River in Ireland, Michael asked Joan to marry him with a traditional Claddagh ring, a symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship. A year later, they celebrated their engagement again, this time with a three-cut diamond ring during a special dinner with family and friends.
Now, 40 years on, their love story is as strong as ever, filled with family, laughter, and the small moments that make a life well-lived.
A life built on love, laughter, and a little bit of compromise
One of the secrets to Michael and Joan’s lasting relationship? A sense of humour and a healthy dose of compromise. Michael readily admits that he’s usually the first to say sorry (though whether he caused the issue is another story entirely). They share a love for reading, cooking (with Michael claiming to be the better chef), gardening, going to the movies, watching the footy, and indulging in fine dining.
Every year, they celebrate Valentine’s Day in a different way, making sure to carve out time just for each other.
Why love matters at every stage of life
Valentine’s Day isn’t just for new romances – it’s an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the relationships that enrich our lives. Studies show that having a loving partner in later years isn’t just good for the heart – it’s good for overall health. Research from Australia’s Better Health Channel suggests that strong relationships can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even improve cognitive function. Older adults in happy relationships experience lower rates of depression, increased resilience, and a greater sense of belonging.
