Each one has a unique story of strength, resilience, and compassion. They are leaders, caregivers, innovators, and friends who contribute immensely to the vibrant fabric of our community.

May’s Story
From our Runaway Bay Retirement Community, we have an inspiring Gold Coast retiree, May. She’s an unsung teaching hero who proves age and gender are never a barrier when it comes to going after what you want.
May is a former primary school teacher in New Zealand. May began a whole new journey and took on the arduous task of studying for her PhD in Australian Foreign Policy which she earned in her 60s.
When her husband’s heart condition deteriorated rapidly, the pair moved into retirement. This allowed May to continue working as a Griffith University lecturer until the age of 78!
While her teaching days have now come to a close, May is well into the next chapter of her life. She got her pilot’s license a few years ago and is giving back to those in need.
A member of a Zonta Club – an international organisation that promotes women’s rights – May is able to get more involved in raising awareness and funding, aligning with this year’s IWD theme of ‘investing in women’.

Julie’s Story
Another inspiring woman who is part of the TriCare community is Julie at Sunnybank Hills Aged Care Residence. She retired at 72. Prior to this she was a psychologist at a prominent Brisbane hospital. Even though she had no secondary education she managed to enter university due to her employment and personal experience. She went on to study a double undergraduate and post graduate degrees then worked in psychology for many years.
Julie is very passionate about helping others. And despite her recent life change she always looks at the bright side of life and has a moment to talk to everyone she comes across. A true inspiration! Thanks, Julie, for being a part of our great community.

Norma’s Story
Introducing Norma, the Fairy Godmother of Mt Gravatt Retirement Community. With over 28 years of service, Norma’s passion for creating a welcoming and comfortable environment makes her a real asset to our residents and staff.
Norma started the colouring calming class, she organises the popular art exhibitions and she also started themed bingo afternoons. Norma is always singing and can always be relied on to dress up for an event!
Her knowledge and attention to detail have transformed the Village into a sparkling example of community and care. She weaves her magic daily, ensuring residents feel included and at ease.

Dianne’s Story
From our Runaway Bay Retirement Community, we’re honoured to share Dianne’s story.
Dianne has given over 44 years to Zonta International. An organisation committed to advancing the status of women worldwide. Key global initiatives currently include ‘We will end child marriage’, ‘We say no to violence against women and girls’ and ‘We will close the gender gap in education’.
Dianne worked hard to expand Zonta’s reach from the heart of Queensland to across the globe in places like California, Canada, and Ireland. Her efforts enabled new clubs that continue to foster a global community of support and advancement for women.
Among her numerous accolades, Dianne has been named one of YWCA Queensland’s 125 Leading Women and received the Zonta District 22 Governor’s Award.
Before moving to Runaway Bay Retirement Community in 2018, Dianne’s adventurous spirit and entrepreneurial flair led her to running an award-winning real estate business in Bundaberg, following years of success in her ceramic tile importing business.
