Each person is asked to pay what they can afford and the Federal Government will cover any gap.
Residential care is 24 hour nursing care. It is available on a permanent basis or for a short term respite stay designed to give a carer a break.
The cost of care is subsidised by the Commonwealth Government for residents who have been assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) and identified as needing 24 hour nursing care or support in the home.
Each person is asked to pay what they can afford and the Federal Government will cover any gap. How much each person is asked to pay is determined by the Department of Human Services – Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs. Request for a Combined Assets and Income Assessment form (SA457) is valid for 120 days and should be submitted as soon as possible before or after entering residential care. For assistance with likely costs contact the Care Placement Service.
Residential care fees are calculated on a daily basis so that you only pay for the time you are in care. They consist of the following:
Basic Daily Fee
This is the minimum every resident is asked to pay. It is indexed at 85% of a standard aged pension. Pensioners continue to receive their entitlement into their nominated bank account each fortnight and receive a monthly statement for payment- usually by Direct Debit.
The Federal Government will pay accommodation costs in full or in part for people whose assets and income are below the threshold. Residents paying their own accommodation costs have the option of Premium, Superior or Deluxe accommodation choices with Extra Services.
Means Tested Care Fee
Does not apply to Respite
Residents with assets and income above the thresholds may also be asked to contribute toward the cost of their care. Annual and lifetime caps apply. Until the determination is received from DHS, an interim fee of $25 per day applies to non-pensioners. Adjustments to your account will be reconciled subject to receipt of the DHS advice.
An Extra Service Fee applies to permanent and respite residents who choose an Extra Service Government approved room offering a higher level of service and accommodation.
